The terms Rolfing® and Structural Integration imply the same system of work. Structural Integration is the original term used by Dr. Ida P. Rolf to describe her work, which became commonly referred to as Rolfing, service marked by the Rolf Institute.

ROLFING® is a hands-on manipulation developed by Dr. Ida P. Rolf 50 years ago. It maipulates the connective tissue to release, realign and balance the whole body. Rolfing enhances your posture and freedom of movement. It can resolve pain and chronic discomfort from many different causes, including back pain, repetitive motion injury, trauma, and aging. This work prevents deterioration and maintains optimal functioning.

It is applied in a standard series of 10 sessions and later in an Advanced Series of 5. Maintenance work and "tune ups" may be continued at regular intervals or as needed.
Dia Lynn was certified in 1981 by the Rolf Institute to apply the Advanced Series, which is repeatable.

STRUCTURAL INTEGRATION is a scientifically validated body therapy. Unlike massage, Structural Integration focuses not on the muscles but on their protective layer, called fascial tissue. Muscles are contracting tissues that give the body and organs physical movement. The fascia surrounds the muscles, bones and organs in the body. The fascia gives muscles their shape and the body its structure. The continuing pull of gravity, the stress of daily activities and physical injuries can pull the body out of alignment. The fascia shortens, tightens and adjusts to accommodate the misalignment. When the body is out of alignment it creates inefficiency and imbalance resulting in stiffness, discomfort and loss of energy.

Structural Integration softens and repositions the fascia. As fascia is lengthened it allows the muscles to move more efficiently. The practitioner will apply pressure to the body, working the entire fascial system in a systematic way. When a body is aligned and balanced it moves with greater ease. It requires less energy to function. Good posture is effortless and breathing is easier. The body becomes more flexible, more coordinated and athletic performance improves. Often, surgery can be avoided entirely.

Dia Lynn was trained in 1977 under Dr. Rolf and her original teachers. She now affiliates with the sister organization: the Guild For Structural Integration.

MYOFASCIAL RELEASE is a specific technique developed by John Barnes R.PT. It features long, slow, melting strokes to superficial planes of fascia. It is used to prepare the body for deeper manipulation to specific areas of fascial restriction. The releasing of large areas of restriction allow for greater movement and freedom from chronic pain. All work is designed to reeducate the client for more efficient body mechanics and teach postural alignment. When all areas of the body are free of myofascial restrictions, one recovers lost flexibility, core strength, increased awareness and overall balance in gravity.

DEEP TISSUE MASSAGE is a type of bodywork that focuses on realigning deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue. It is especially helpful for chronically tense and contracted areas such as stiff necks, low back pain and shoulder muscle spasm. Because strokes are slower and deeper, it may only be possible to treat a few affected areas per session. This can be done in 60 minutes.

A full body deep tissue massage can affect 2 layers deep throughout the body but not stop for particular problem areas. Sessions require 90 minutes.
